What Is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a complex developmental disability in the brain that is present from early childhood. It can be characterized by difficulty in communication, forming relationship, and the presence of unusual behaviors and interests. Children with autism develop differently and have unpredictable learning patterns.

What are the forms of Autism?

There are five currently known forms of Autism:

  • PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Delay – Not Otherwise Specified).
  • Autism (sometimes referred to as Classic Autism, Early Infantile Autism, Childhood Autism, or Autistic Disorder)
  • Asperger Syndrome
  • Rett Syndrome
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder

What does Autism feel like?

Autistic children are extremely sensitive to their surroundings, which is why they result in unusual behavior – they are extremely sensitive to noises, smells, and lights. This is known as sensory overload, where one’s surroundings are extremely overwhelming. An example of this is in the video below.

How Can Autism be treated?

There is no known cure to treat Autism – just ways to help make it easier to live with, such as different kind of therapies and medications to lessen the abnormal behavior.
